Moving Forward

Monthly Letter from Greg Newman (the CSA Board Chair) to all CSA members…
September 15, 2016 • Fort Collins, Colorado

The Citizen Science Association is moving forward. Revitalized through the new energy brought forth by five new board members, our Board of Directors had a chance to gather in person this past week for an invigorating and productive meeting. Gathering in Washington, DC, gave us a chance to attend a meeting of the Federal Community of Practice on Crowdsourcing and Citizen Science (CCS) as a pre-cursor to our own meeting, which was hosted by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). We are grateful to both of these partners – the CCS for inviting us to connect and explore opportunities for collaborations, and the AGU for hosting our meeting and inspiring conversations about creating a culture of public engagement!
At our Board meeting we had an opportunity to prioritize our upcoming work and focus on a few goals moving forward. We honed in on strategic planning, board efficiencies, supporting working groups, responding to inclusivity, diversity, and ethics issues raised by our IDE working group, membership structure, and liaisons with partners (e.g., the Federal Community of Practice on Crowdsourcing and Citizen Science (CC, the European Citizen Science Association, and the Australian Citizen Science Association). We even had a chance to embark on an evening scavenger hunt (good to gain a sense of place, and each other)!
So – to the Board members and collaborators who attended (whether in person or in spirit), a heartfelt ‘thank you.’ And to all members and non-members alike – look for exciting things moving forward from the CSA!
