Join us for a community conversation about project resilience amidst funding uncertainty. As part of the AAPS official fall meeting, this 1.5 hour online session opens with the Association’s annual report and highlights commitments to confronting challenges and fostering a bright future for this field. The headline event–a fishbowl discussion–aims to explore the hidden synergies and untapped resources that can help projects stay afloat during lean funding cycles. At AAPS, we know that we do science better together, and through this event we strive to identify ways we as a community can support one another and continue to grow as a field of practice.
The fishbowl event will open with project leaders sharing insights into the choices they made in the face of funding challenges before moving into a more open conversation about what’s needed to make that happen, and what we can do together to build capacity as a community.
The following speakers will share reflections on how they have navigated funding disruptions in their long standing projects/programs and advice for how to maintain project integrity as capacity changes.
Theresa Crimmins, director of National Phenology Network, will reflect on her exploration of commercial revenue streams for the platform as outlined in a 2025 paper, “Sustaining Science Infrastructure Is Difficult; Is Commercialization the Answer? The USA National Phenology Network’s Experience.”
Julia Byrd, Citizen Science Program Manager for the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, will share about how the Council’s development committee leverages partnerships to identify funding opportunities beyond what the organization itself may be eligible for.
