Introducing the #CitSci2019 keynote speaker, Dr. Max Liboiron

In 2016, the CSA made the decision to move CitSci2017 from its planned location in Raleigh, North Carolina to Minneapolis, Minnesota. The move (which left the CSA with financial obligations to hold CitSci2019 in Raleigh), North Carolina was done after carefully considering the conflict presented by North Carolina’s bathroom bill to the CSA’s core values– values of inclusivity, respect, and openness to all people regardless of race, ethnicity, class, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, accessibility needs, or country of origin.

In light of the CSA’s core values and its special track on environmental justice and citizen science, the CSA is proud to have Dr. Max Liboiron as Thursday’s keynote speaker.

Dr. Liboiron is an Assistant Professor in Geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and directs Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR). She is an artist, feminist, scientist, environmental activist, open science proponent and scholar who masterfully weaves together cross-disciplinary perspectives into cohesive and compelling narratives.

Dr. Liboiron is also a member of the Global Open Science Hardware Movement (GOSH), which seeks to reduce barriers between creators and users of scientific tools to support the pursuit and growth of diverse forms of knowledge. Her work in science and technology studies bridge environmental, social, and political science and focus on how unnoticed emerging harms such as toxicants from marine plastics become apparent in science and activism, and how these methods of representation relate to action.

Dr. Liboiron has been awarded the Nature Inspiration Award (adult category) from the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Making and Doing Prize from the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S), the Samuel Eshborn Service Award from New York University, the Cleaning the Air Award from the PSC-CUNY Environmental Health and Safety Watchdogs, and more. For a taste of what you might hear from her at #CitSci2019, visit her site and watch her presentations.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the early bird discounted rate and register for #CitSci2019 by January 31st. Be sure to book a room at one of the conference hotels to help the CSA uphold their financial and moral obligations. If the hotel commitments are successfully filled, the CSA will donate to the LGBT Center of Raleigh.
