Distinguished Service Award
This award is given to a volunteer (or volunteers) in appreciation of their ongoing and outstanding service to the Association’s efforts and community. The award is given in recognition of the foundational role of volunteer service in this field and in this Association. As much as recognizing an individual’s outstanding contributions, we hope this award also inspires others to future service, and to recognize that each of us can play an influential role in shaping this field and community.
The Rick Bonney Award for Field Leadership
This award is given in recognition of the leadership of Rick Bonney and his vision, service, and support in establishing this work as a field of practice and this Association as a space to advance excellence. Rick’s work to advance best practices in research collaborations set this field in motion. His numerous formative initiatives have included the initial Citizen Science Conference and Toolkit, foundational research of the design and impact of Public Participation in Scientific Research, and serving as the first Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Citizen Science: Theory & Practice. Rick continues to support and inspire new practitioners, currently with a focus on work in Federal agencies. This award will therefore be given to celebrate those whose leadership has paved the way for field-building initiatives and who foster and inspire a commitment to excellence in those around them.
The Dana Rotman Award for Student Research
This award, named in honor and in remembrance of Dr. Dana Rotman, recognizes and encourages excellence in student research. Dana, a student of Dr. Jenny Preece, explored the motivations for participation in citizen science projects, including the cultural factors driving participation. While Dana died shortly after receiving her doctorate in 2014, her ground-breaking work remains relevant and timely. This award celebrates the intellectual leadership Dana brought to this field, and aims to inspire and uplift emerging student researchers.
AAPS Award for Lifetime Contributions to the Participatory Sciences
This award recognizes those who have, across their careers, created an atmosphere for impacts and innovations in the participatory sciences. The award aims to celebrate an individual’s generous and extensive commitments to colleagues, projects, research, and the field throughout their lifetime, and those whose work serves as an inspiration to others.
