Join the Citizen Science Month Working Group

In just a couple of years, Global Citizen Science Month (April) has grown from a single day of events, to a coordinated effort supported by SciStarter, the National Library of Medicine, Arizona State University, the Citizen Science Association, Science Friday, National Geographic and many other collaborators from around the world. Global Citizen Science Month encompasses online events and opportunities to contribute to projects from home. And April 2021 is just around the corner! It’s time to prepare. Learn more about this in a recent blog post and in the Citizen Science Month Welcome Letter. One way you can contribute to the…

A note of appreciation

Post by CSA board member Eva Lewandowski In May, four members of the CSA Board of Directors finished their terms and cycled off the Board. Many of you are familiar with Cat Stylinski, Alison Young, Michael Pocock, and Caren Cooper for their work in the citizen science field, but their contributions to the CSA Board over the past few years have been largely behind-the-scenes.  Below is a brief overview of some- not all- of the volunteer efforts these four have contributed to advancing CSA during their time on the Board. Please join us in thanking them for their leadership and…

Taking Responsibility

Taking Responsibility

A note from Interim Executive Director Jennifer Shirk At this moment of shared attention to racial disparities, what's on my mind is taking responsibility - in particular, reflecting on where we can take responsibility at the Citizen Science Association (CSA) and across the field. CSA stands for integrity in science and integrity in engagement. As an Association of people devoted to this work - to bridging the gaps between science and society - we know that these two things go hand in hand in what we do. But it is necessary to take a deep look at the way we understand integrity in…

Build your network while building up citizen science–participate in the Citizen Science Association general meeting and working groups

Successful citizen science, community-based monitoring, and other collaborative research efforts necessarily involve many different participants and stakeholders - and planning and running them effectivly does, too. The Citizen Science Association (CSA) aims to reflect this plurality in its membership, and invites all attending CitSci2019 to join the General Meeting, Thursday from 3:30PM-4:30PM. Learn about CSA's new strategic plan, progress towards towards goals, and ways to get involved to take advantage of member benefits and inform future directions for CSA. The meeting will also introduce CSA's working groups, a great way to go deeper with advancing citizen science and your connections…

Welcoming Austin Mast to CSA’s Board

CSA is please to welcome Austin Mast to the Board of Directors for a one-year appointment to fill an open seat. Austin brings leadership and (much needed, for CSA) financial management skills from his time as Past-President of the Society of Herbarium Curators, Treasurer of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, and member of the leadership team of iDigBio, NSF’s National Resource for Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections. Austin is a professional biologist with a deep interest in focusing his domain's widespread goodwill towards outreach activities into formal and sustained partnerships between professional science organizations and CSA—partnerships that can broadcast…

Is citizen science “hope punk?”

Is citizen science “hope punk?”

End of year reflections from CSA's Interim Executive Director, Jennifer Shirk The Global Mosquito Alert Consortium tackles issues of public health and species distribution through locally-driven data collection efforts. "Hope punk" is, I've recently learned, a new term for the genre of podcasts that make up most of my playlist (and maybe some of yours as well). As described by some writers and journalists, hope punk is the sense that we can make disruptive, positive choices in light of daunting and unthinkable challenges. To me, this sounds a lot like citizen science. Many of us do citizen science in the…

What’s Happening with the CSA Ethics Working Group?

Image Credit: Madhumathi S V [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)] Post by Chris Santos-Lang, Co-Chair, CSA Ethics Working Group Have you noticed the risk of reinventing the wheel, wasting precious resources to solve problems that other scientists have already solved? Have you noticed universities and laboratories providing tools which their researchers use to build upon each other's solutions? Have you noticed that a bunch of those tools fit under the category "Ethics"?  The purpose of the CSA Ethics Working Group is to provide reusable ethics tools relevant to citizen science analogous to existing tools for non-citizen-science. We have started by building…
