Dr. Elena Bautista Sparrow of the University of Alaska Fairbanks received the Youth Environmental Science (YES) Medal for her work with the GLOBE program and other efforts in the Arctic from the Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists (YLAES). My name is Sadie Coffin, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the first AAPS + NASA citizen science fellow. I’m currently pursuing a PhD in Astrophysics and managing a citizen science project, Redshift Wrangler. Redshift Wrangler is a citizen science project hosted on the platform Zooniverse that invites and teaches participants to help our research team classify galaxy spectra and calculate redshifts for distant galaxies. Last month we announced a fellowship opportunity at AAPS in partnership with the NASA Citizen Science Leaders Series. We were surprised and delighted to receive 55 applications! They came from graduate students and early career professionals in diverse disciplines, with backgrounds and experience that mirrors the range of practice and application that we see in the field of participatory science.
