Members of the AAPS Board play a crucial role in shaping the future of this Association. As a working board responsible for the governance and oversight of a growing nonprofit organization, the makeup of the Board is essential to its success. In line with the mission and strategic plan of AAPS, the Governance Committee has sought candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas deemed priority this year:
- Revenue and development planning; especially recruiting and retaining major donors and conference/event sponsors, and strategic revenue generation
- Justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion; especially organizational structures for equity
- Governance and policy development
- Nonprofit operations and management; especially human resources and organizational business planning
- Organizational growth: especially building strategic partnerships, and recruiting/retaining members
This year the Board says farewell to three members: Eveline Wandl-Vogt (who has completed a three year term), as well as Heather Fischer and Austin Mast (each of whom has completed two terms for a total of six years each). We are grateful to these leaders for the time and expertise they have shared with this Association, as well as to the balance of the Board for ongoing service (all are listed here).
All members in good standing of AAPS will receive a ballot by mail for voting to take place beginning May 1st, 2025. The voting period stays open for two weeks. Jaclyn Jagdish Tejwani
Jaclyn Jagdish Tejwani is a Director of Research and Evaluation at WestEd, an educational research and development agency. Tejwani’s background includes studies supporting the educator workforce; citizen science; rural and community schools; and broadening participation in STEM disciplines in K–12 and higher education. Her work embeds participatory and culturally responsive evaluation practices, including bringing diverse evaluation teams into the work and recruiting and supporting community members to collaborate on projects, ensuring they are fairly compensated for their contributions. The through line for all her work is a focus on diversity and inclusion to support more equitable systems and outcomes for all learners.
At WestEd, Tejwani serves on several agency-wide councils, including the Strategic Advisory Council, the Research and Evaluation Council, and Business Development Leadership Councils. Through these roles, she’s gained insight and experiences in operations and management, strategic business planning and development, and fostering strategic partnerships. She currently manages a portfolio of $5 million in project budgets.
Tejwani welcomes the opportunity to join the AAPS Board and broaden her service to the community.

Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson
Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson is a scholar/activist. She currently serves as Director of Infrastructure and Development for the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network. She has experience connecting undergraduate and graduate students, especially at HBCUs, with community groups working on health equity and environmental justice issues. Dr. VJ works locally, nationally, and internationally to preserve cultural and historic heritage through service on several statewide and non-profit organizations, including the NC African American Heritage Commission (as Chair), NC Historical Commission; Preservation NC (as outgoing board chair), NC Maritime History Council Advisory Board and National Registry Advisory Committee. Promoting public participation in science research as a board member for the Association for Advancing Participatory Sciences and through grants funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation is a core aspect of Dr. VJ’s ongoing activist work.
