CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 Libraries, museums, and other 'third spaces' make great partners for citizen/community science projects and often serve as community hubs for project volunteers. Libraries are increasingly taking on the role of citizen science hubs by providing safe, free spaces to meet and learn, access to equipment, experts and data, and resources to help connect information and data to local action. In a single year, over 170 million registered users visited U.S. public libraries over 1.35 billion times giving libraries the potential to transform participatory research approaches and outcomes. How might your project harness the power of libraries…

Environmental Justice at CitSci2019

Environmental Justice at CitSci2019

We chose environmental justice as a special track at CitSci2019 to highlight the unique lessons we can learn from community science methods employed by environmental justice groups since the 1980s. Environmental justice (EJ) advocates and activists have for decades used community science to raise awareness about EJ concerns, inpower residents, increase community capacity, and translate research to action. A special panel discussion with activists from across the US and Puerto Rico was held on this topic called, “Environmental Justice and Community Science: A Social Movement for Inpowerment, Compliance, and Action.” In addition the the special panel, there were workshops and…

Build your network while building up citizen science–participate in the Citizen Science Association general meeting and working groups

Successful citizen science, community-based monitoring, and other collaborative research efforts necessarily involve many different participants and stakeholders - and planning and running them effectivly does, too. The Citizen Science Association (CSA) aims to reflect this plurality in its membership, and invites all attending CitSci2019 to join the General Meeting, Thursday from 3:30PM-4:30PM. Learn about CSA's new strategic plan, progress towards towards goals, and ways to get involved to take advantage of member benefits and inform future directions for CSA.
